Cicadas

Saturday night, our June bug took second stage to an actual bug: a molting cicada . When Aaron first spotted it, only the head had emerged from the shell. ("I think maybe it's two bugs mating." "Yeah, maybe, no wait! It's molting!") We watched for about an hour, until the entire bug had emerged and unfurled its wings. We were tempted to stay longer in the hopes of seeing it fly away, but it was late, and we had no idea how long it would take for the wings to dry and harden.

The arm-like green things down its side are the wings, still tightly folded.

Here you can see the wings starting to unfold.
