Happy Hazel & Growing Juniper

Juniper's in the middle of a massive growth spurt. She's been very sad as we pull lots of her favorite clothes out of rotation and set them aside for Hazel to wear in the future. We've compromised by allowing her to keep wearing her PJs for as long as she wants.

(Actually, that's not entirely true. We did just enforce the retirement of her beloved Fantastic Four shirt. It didn't start out as a PJ shirt, but she was so devastated when I told her it was too small that I allowed her to reclassify it as sleepwear and thus keep it in rotation for another year or so. We didn't need to set it aside; it just went straight from Juniper's PJ drawer to Hazel's shirt drawer.)

Quotable Hazel

[After sneezing] I did a bless you.

Why did the turtle cross the road? To find a shell!

Why did the moster not share? Because it was a goldfish!
[Actual joke that Juniper learned from her joke book and tried to teach Hazel: Why didn't the lobster share? Because it's a shellfish!]

I gotta good idea. I gotta good plan.

[Protesting the application of her nightly eczema lotion] It's my body! I didn't ask you.

[Insistently shaking her hand in a karate chop motion] I be right back in three minutes. I be right back in three minutes.

[In the car]
Sally: Juniper, do you want to talk with me, or are you reading?
Juniper: I'm reading.
Hazel: I can talk with you, mama.

Shiny Pom Poms

Aaron and his pals at Gale Force 9 are hard at work developing a board game based on the Firefly TV show. As he immerses himself in the Firefly 'Verse, Aaron's taking inspiration from his very own Jayne hat, made with love by his mama. (Thanks, Janet!)

No Firefly reference for Hazel, but what hat-focused photo isn't improved by a cute kid in a cupcake hat? When Hazel saw her dad in the Jayne hat, she wanted to put on her own "pom pom hat." I'd say they both look pretty cunning, don't you think?

I'm so glad that I'm not two

It is so, so hard. That sentence is both flip and sincere at the same time. It really is hard to have so little control over your own body, to have so many things you want to do but can't, to have so little understanding of why things have to be they way they are and not the way you want them to be. I give thanks literally every single day that I am not two. And that I do not remember being two.

At the same time, you sometimes have to laugh at the child who is crying because you gave her the thing she asked for, or the child who is violently protesting the fact that you stepped away from her after she announced, "I'm gonna hurt you" and then pinched you, or the child who is yawning and rubbing her eyes and screaming, "I'm not tired, I'm just sad!"

Happy Valentine's Day

Special Valentine's Day breakfast: red, heart-shaped biscuits; pink whipped cream; and mixed berries. Hazel was a fan.

Juniper got into the spirit of the day and really wanted to wear Valentine's Day clothes. However, her tastes are such that she doesn't have lots of pink and hearts in her wardrobe. She was considering her red and black checkered lumberjack overalls but was saved by discovering these tights with hearts and flowers hiding in the back of her sock drawer. She wanted to wear the tights with nothing but a red turtleneck, but I put my foot down on that one. The final outfit: flowery tights, a purple dress with pink flowers, orange rainbow shirt (in her mind, rainbows are almost as Valentiney as hearts are), pink galoshes, and her pink/red/purple striped coat.

Juniper was a little sad about going to school today, and at first we didn't understand why. Juniper finally was able to explain that she was sad about going to school on a holiday, because holidays are family time. We talked about it, and she got the idea that Valentine's Day is like Halloween, not like Christmas or Thanksgiving. For the record, she went on to have a fantastic day at school.

Happy Hanukkah

Continuing with the theme of catching up on holidays and events from late 2012...

The girls loved the dreidel game (especially the gelt), and Henry was very excited to sing "Happy Birthday, Hanukkah" (his own creation) when the menorah was lit.

School Photos

Another year of great school photos for Juniper! (And another year of having her dad as the school photographer.)

In order to accommodate children with different class schedules, Aaron was in Juniper's class two days of the week. I like the fact that as a result, we've got some photos of Juniper dressed up for school pictures and some looking a like she does every other day.

It's fun to see how much she has grown from her Chickadee class to her Owls class to this year's Larks class.
